Smart Packaging: Added value from concept to consumer

MULTIVAC Group at interpack (Hall 5, Stand A23)

19.03.2026

Wolfertschwenden, 19 March 2026 – Companies today have to consider packaging in its entirety: In addition to the costs of the materials, there are also other factors such as recyclability, carbon footprint and transparency within the supply chain. At interpack 2026 the MULTIVAC Group will be showing with its Smart Packaging approach, how packaging and the associated processes can be rethought. The company's products and services range from comprehensive packaging consultancy, advice on implementing forward-looking concepts for the closed-loop economy and material reduction, right up to the use of digital solutions – and always with the aim of creating genuine added value along the entire added value chain. There will be particular focus on the regulatory requirements from the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR), as well as the associated challenges presented by the closed-loop economy, the reduction in CO₂ footprint and measures to reduce material consumption.

Smart Packaging as the holistic life cycle approach

MULTIVAC sees Smart Packaging as an end-to-end life cycle approach – from the first decision on the design right up to the recycling stage. Central to the process of innovation and consultation is always the question, of how packaging solutions can be developed, so that they combine sustainability requirements with industrial-scale efficiency and digital transparency. "The closed-loop economy is the focus of our approach. Here the use of recyclable packaging materials and a suitably tailored pack design are crucial,” explains Marina Schedel, Project Manager in the Innovation Center at MULTIVAC. “Another important element is the systematic reduction in material. Thanks to an optimised pack design and a reduction in film thickness, as well as innovative technology in the forming process and die layout, the material consumption and therefore also the CO₂ value and packaging costs can be reduced significantly – without compromising product protection, line output and process reliability. Digital features, such as the product passport, can also create transparency along the entire added value chain.“

Smart Packaging – Solutions for companies from hand-crafting to industrial-scale

At the trade fair MULTIVAC will be demonstrating this expertise using many different types of packaging technology - from trays, flowpacks and pre-made pouches right up to thermoformed applications - while underlining its claim to be rethinking the nature of packaging as sustainable, efficient and intelligent.

The fully automatic T  305 traysealer is designed for small and medium-sized batches and, thanks to the servo drives used throughout, is able to process rigid trays very reliably and at high output. Its modular design facilitates rapid product change, easy cleaning and efficient servicing, while also enabling the die to be laid out very flexibly from one- to four-track. Loading areas, which are available as options in various lengths, allow the machine to be integrated very precisely into different production environments, even where an automatic denester is used. At the trade fair a T 305 MF traysealer model for producing high-quality MultiFreshTM vacuum skin packs will be on display.

The horizontal W  500 flowpacker is designed for challenging production environments, and it is also capable of handling delicate products very reliably. Its open and easily accessible design makes product change, cleaning and servicing simple, while its servo-controlled box-motion sealing system enables hermetically sealed packs to be produced. The machine is completely constructed in the MULTIVAC Hygienic DesignTM, so that secure and reliable operation is assured, particularly where a hygienic environment is critical.

Also on show will be the high-output B 625 chamber belt machine for packaging products efficiently in film pouches. Equipped with the new "Single Wire Seam Seal" system, the machine guarantees a consistently high and reproducible sealing quality – even with film materials that are becoming ever thinner, or where sealing areas are contaminated. The sustainable sealing system also makes it possible to achieve a reliable seal without the use of water cooling.

The R 085 e-concept thermoforming packaging machine will be shown as an entry-level model for packaging small batches very efficiently, and it is capable of running conventional flexible and rigid films as well as sustainable materials. This compact allrounder requires only a small space, and it operates solely with electricity without the need for compressed air or cooling water. This means that it can be used very flexibly within the production area.

With its RX Ultimate model, MULTIVAC will also be exhibiting an intelligent, sustainable and future-proof thermoforming packaging machine, which sets a new benchmark in thermoforming packaging. Thanks to its progressive multi-sensor control and seamless online connectivity, the machine achieves consistent pack quality and high output. The innovative pixelHEAT and pixelSEAL technology optimises the process reliability, while ensuring that ultra-thin and sustainable films are run very consistently.
