Digital product passport: MULTIVAC will be presenting a complete solution for the food sector

Transparency throughout the entire supply chain

29.09.2025

Wolfertschwenden, 29 September 2025 – A new level of transparency for consumers, easier stock management for retailers, traceability for manufacturers, and optimised recycling of packaging – all this can be achieved with a digital product passport. At interpack 2026 the MULTIVAC Group, together with its partners, will be presenting a completely integrated solution, which takes into account the needs of all the players in the supply chain.

The digital product passport opens up many new opportunities for food manufacturers. By offering comprehensive advice and dedicated solutions, MULTIVAC intends to make it as easy as possible for manufacturers to implement the solution that is best for them.

The product, packaging material and process data are captured by the production line and assigned to the individual pack or batch. A QR code with GS1 digital link, which is individual to the product or batch, is generated automatically and applied to the particular pack. Any additional information, which is relevant to the various players in the supply chain, can therefore be provided with each pack.

As part of the overall solution developed by MULTIVAC with its partners, there is also a website, which consumers can access by scanning the QR code, where they can find specific information about product origin, processing stages, and even cooking tips for the product. This enables the consumer to have extra information and maximum transparency about the product, and the food producer is able to interact more with customers.

The same code also includes information such as the best-before date. Nowadays this information is of course already printed on the packaging, but thanks to the GS1 code it is now possible, when scanning the product at the checkout, to precisely establish, which pack with which best-before date it actually is. This makes stock management much easier for the retailer, as well as significantly reducing food wastage.

Food producers also gain additional transparency in terms of the whereabouts of products from a particular production batch. In the case of recycling companies, specific information about the composition of the packaging material can make the recycling process considerably easier.

At interpack 2026, which takes place in Düsseldorf from 7 to 13 May 2026, visitors will be able to learn much more about the many opportunities presented by a digital product passport, by visiting the MULTIVAC Group's main stand (Hall 5, Stand A23).
