MeetMULTIVAC: IT Manager

Introducing the team at MULTIVAC

09.11.2022

At MULTIVAC, our people share the same vision and values to help process and package what is valuable to your business, but how much do you know about the different areas of our business, and the people who make it all happen?

This year, we’re making business more human and introducing you to some of our hard-working, knowledgeable, employees from the various departments at MULTIVAC UK.

It’s our November installment of MeetMULTIVAC...

Mike Atkins, IT Manager, MULTIVAC UK and MULTIVAC Ireland

Tell us more about your role!

I started at MULTIVAC UK in June 2022 after working with the NHS for 13 years so I’m only 4 months into my new job! My role is to be the face of IT for MULTIVAC UK and Ireland, dealing with anything and everything IT related. I ensure that all members of staff in the business have the IT hardware/software that they require to carry out their roles. My job can range from resetting a password or talking a user through setting up a shortcut, to ensuring a new starter is set up with everything they need. Since joining MULTIVAC UK, I have been fortunate enough to visit our headquarters in Wolferschwenden in Germany where I was able to meet my fellow IT colleagues from different MULTIVAC daughter companies across the world. That was a great opportunity to meet lots of new faces and understand who I can turn to for additional support.

What does your day to day look like?

No two days are the same at MULTIVAC! Staff within the business can contact me in a number of ways: either using Teams, finding me in the office, or giving my mobile a call. One of the parts that I enjoy about my role is that it’s incredibly varied. My day can consist of responding to queries and tickets, configuring new or replacement hardware, setting up new desks, upgrading existing software, and the list goes on!

What do you like about working at MULTIVAC? What is your favourite part of your job?

I really enjoy interacting with staff and helping everyone with all their IT queries. If I can assist someone in completing a task more efficiently, this gives me great job satisfaction.

What’s new in your department recently? Is there anything exciting happening?

We are currently looking for a replacement phone system to use in our offices. Our current system has been in place for a number of years now and it is time to look at something new that will suit the business needs, taking the new way of working since COVID-19 into consideration. With staff in the field, in the office and working from home, we need to make sure the system that we choose suits all staff within the business and meets our working demands.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role? How do you overcome them?

With some of the field based staff, it‘s challenging to work out how I can best support them. To look at improving this I have planned to spend some time shadowing our technicians and sales staff on their customer visits, this will help me to see some of the environments they work in on a daily basis and understand what it is I can do to best support them.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

My fiancé and I bought our first house back in April 2022. This has been a great opportunity to learn some new DIY skills to make the house our home. We also have a 2 year old Springer Spaniel called Ronnie who always keeps us on our toes! He is incredibly energetic and needs plenty of walks to expel his energy. I also enjoy playing video games with my friends from time to time.

What did you want to be when you grew up when you were younger?

I originally wanted to be a car mechanic when I was younger as I had a very keen interest in cars, and I still do! However, after realising that being a mechanic wasn’t for me, I turned to the IT industry. My very first IT role was a short contract that involved applying asset stickers to all pieces of IT hardware in a store room, from there I was able to build a wealth of experience in all areas of the department.

Tell us something we don’t know! A surprising or fun fact about you...

Throughout lockdown, I built and upgraded a number of computers which required various types of water cooling in order to keep the temperatures low.

Stay tuned for next month‘s instalment of MeetMULTIVAC!
